12/8/2011 Kansas City, KS to Warrensberg, MI
With roadworks on the freeway out of Kansas City, the going was slow for awhile. We were all well rested but travel weary.
Not mentioned earlier, a canon camera was located at Topeka, a reasonable size town west of Kansas City.
So the posting of a few pics is now possible again. Prices here are more expensive than at home.
Turning off highway 70 and heading south to Warrensberg was a better proposition for Tony rather than drop me off all the way into Clinton for commencement of the Katy Trail. This would enable him to get the girls home at a respectable hour, after all school begins next week for them.
Arriving in Warrensberg (16000 bods) about 1530 we bade farewell, my nest for the night was a $35 room at a motel, once again the proprietor was Indian.
Previous guests appeared to have just thrown cigarettes on the carpet, where they burnt out. I ate across the road, returned and slept really well. The motel room served its purpose with minimal financial fuss.
Warrensberg has a university that is recognised as a nusing training facility, but moreso it is a prominent aviation university. It has its own airport. Whiteman Airbase is nearby, it is the only base housing B-2 bombers in the US.
The plan is to ride the Katy Trail. It is the longest developed rail trail in the US. Being 225 miles long from Clinton to St Charles near St Louis. It follows the Missouri River on its journey to the Mississippi.
There are 39 towns enroute, briefly, between 1865 and 1915 an extensive rail system passed through Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma and Taxas .It ceased operation in 1986. The Missouri Dept of Nat resources acquired the right of way and developed this premier trail, that today is shared by horses, cycles and walkers.
