Portage Des Sioux to Alton for the weekend.
The morning was spent in the marina office catching up on computer work.
Mike had offered to run me across the river in a john boat, but got held up in St Louis, so Christie took me over to Alton in a pick up. This was so kind of them as it saved me a 20 mile ride down the river ,over the bridge and back up to Alton. She dropped me off at Tonys house .
I had itching my ankles and legs relentlessly for a day now, something had caused this irritation. It turned out to be Chiggers ,not unlike our grass ticks which have on more than one occasion used me as a host on mass.
My ankles were swollen and my eyes were puffy in the morning, assuming it was an allegy, antihistamine tablets were bought . Asking Tony about my symptoms he mentioned Chiggers .
Chiggers are tiny, six-legged wingless organisms (larvae) that grow up to become a type of mite. Chiggers are found in tall grass and weeds. Their bite causes severe itching.
A track in a corn field had been traversed two days prior, with weeds on the track probably enabling them to attach to my socks. Their irritation was immense, with scratching occurring till a scab formed.
Time sorts the little buggers out, just like grass ticks at home.
The afternoon was spent having a few beers and tea with Judy whom I’d met during my previous visit to Alton .Saturday we went up to Grafton to see a country singer of some talent, Taking Tonys campervan up to stay the night in. He had the kids for the weekend.
Sunday was a relaxing day ,going out for breakfast, at times watching the devastation Irene was causing and spending the afternoon in a restaurant updating computer programs. An early night was enjoyed.
