Up early and saying goodbye to everyone, the motel was now empty except for us after easter, the haul to Salinas began.
Once again a lot of small beaches were ridden past, many of these towns were now more local places, not so many tourists.
At about 0930 at huge gasoline loading wharf was in site near Monteverde.
Outside the workers entrance on the road was a couple selling soup and juice. Stopping here and eating with some of the workers, they told me the project has been going for 3 years. The terminal protrudes 300m into the sea.
Ecuadorian, Colombian and Spanish companies have been involved. The project is nearing completion and will facilitate the loading of ships with refined gasoline for export to other South American nations.
The day was now beginning to warm up.
On the long beach near San Pablo, A group of men were seen hauling a net in on what was left of the beach as it was high tide.
Parking up, as the road was almost on the beach, I walked down to talk to them. The scene was alive with Figates and Grey Pelicans, they were having a feast.
About 20 men were struggling with at least a ton of small fish in the net trying to get it up the beach.
It was full of very small fish among a few bigger ones. The small fish were used in cerviches and also minced.
It was a sight to behold, the waves were washing the full net at them, some fish would escape, all the while the birds were enjoyed what slipped through the net.
An old ford pickup was on the beach to be loaded with the bounty, which was transferred from the net with small handheld nets.
They told me it was a very good haul.
This exact scene was going on every few hundred metres along the beach.
Arriving at Ballenita, a couple of drinks were enjoyed, as was viewing the ocean from a look out area.
What was not enjoyed was the flat tyre due to broken glass. Luckily, a shelter there provided a shady spot to do the repairs.
This is the first puncture for some time now. This morning I was thinking how I have not had a flat for so long. It’s unreal, two hours later guess what.
In the distance the towers of Salinas could be seen, like a mini Gold Coast, in Oz.
It was a busy town, in the main street guys were selling orange juice from three wheelers. Much to the amusement of two cops and the vendors five cups were drunk while chatting about things and motels.
It was so nice, cold and the real thing.
A motel was found, at a super discount rate after some haggling. It is a bit of a luxury affair, it even has a lobby and my room is air conditioned. Though I am not using it, the ceiling fans are more than adequate and there is less chance of a chill.
Alli and Glen, the couple I rode with back in Colombia for a day or two, for reasons of a wedding in Canada are now there. Reading their blog, she said she was sick, and following tests was found to be full of parasites. They went back early due to this.
This reminded me to take my Secnidozol, it has been about 3 months, this stuff nails parasites. If you have them, they slowly just wear you down, Devin also had a dose of these wretched little buggers.
This Secndizol is broad spectrum and kills everything following a dose, the goody’s will come back of course. For me anything less than 100% energy would be a problem.
Some groceries were bought, the likes of lentils, pasta, chilli flakes, milk powder and soup.
A movie was enjoyed in English with Spanish subtitles, it was called Asesinos de Elite, based on a true story about the SAS in Oman.
This town has all the modern services.
