Misi-ziibi - Ojibwe version of the name, meaning "river spread out all over".
26/6/11, Bena to bloody nowhere, 0k, wet and thunder storms,17°
About 0300hrs this morning it started coming down bigtime. The deluge continued through to dawn. Todays plans of heading to Palisade were all but thwarted.
I reluctantly left the tent for a visit to the loo, and took the cooker and left over food in the wok to reheat it under shelter, damn good too.
The rain continued unabated, so I thought the nest was the best place. It was really coming down now with the intermittent sound of thunder.
I was just about asleep when the tent nearly got blown out of the park, and all my gear for that matter. I have never heard thunder like it. Unlike home where at close quarters it is most often a high pitched crack. This bugger was like a sonic boom. It rang true of the huge wilderness up here in Minnesota.
Fell straight back to sleep and arose about 1000hrs very refreshed.
Over at the shop even the girl serving, a local, even commented on the severity of the thunder.
So to be honest I,m not going to dress mutton up as lamb. I have done 5/8’s of nothing today. That thunder was the highlight.
Have been in the shop drinking coffee and mucking about on my laptop.
Incidently, the tent is as dry as driftwood above high water. The Hillberg tarp is probably the single most important luxury I chose to bring. It is ultra high quality and keeps any amount of rain from troubling me.
With a wet tent, you might as well be sitting in the rain with a raincoat on, whilst at the same time wishing you were somewhere else.
Fine weather is forecast for tomorrow so will be out of here early.
Interesting comment on the BBC that are based here in the US, reporting on local matters. “ Sarah Palin is failing in an upwards direction”.
Today has been very relaxing to say the least, the bar and grill across the rail track will be responsible for feeding me tonight, all reports from the owner of the park say here it could be better. Nowhere else to go, I am going to give them the benefit of the doubt, hopefully prove him wrong.
I am thinking of getting a truck tyre tube cut into one long length and leading it outside the tent to eliminate having to leave the tent and getting wet or smothered in mossys when a leak is required!!
I would recommend this place anytime with shelter in the shop and coffee on tap and great shower set up. My hosts were great guys who were getting ready for a big music festival over July 4 weekend in the park.
