29/7/2011 Grafton all day.
After a late night and many Buds, I arose in the luxury surroundings of my room at the Reubel. I would recommend this place to anyone, it’s great. A favorite with honeymooners and weekend bikers from St Louis.
I spent the morning in the bar catching up on this stuff and trying to work out how to get these pages easier to navigate, it,s becoming a bit of a pain, but with endeavour to work it out so it’s not so hit and miss.
Venturing out I went and had breakfast, did a bit of washing, then caught up with a friend and we hired a couple of kayaks and got taken up the Illinois river in the truck, to leisurely drift, paddle and swim back down. These Asian Carp are in the river here, recently introduced they are a major problem. The buggers launch themselves out of the water at every opportunity. Landing in boats is not uncommon. We found a sandy shallow channel and hung there for sometime just chatting while wallowing in the knee deep flowing water.. It reminded me of a time at Station Creek, hanging in the stream, laughing and talking shite.
Arriving back at the hire place,Dawn and I hung in their pool for awhile. It was a great afternoon.
This town is so nice, it sits on the banks of the MR and a stones throw upstream is the confluence of the Illinois river.
Dawn had the night off from work here at the hotel so we went to the Loading Dock bar on the river, a great bar and outdoor set up with a band playing on a stage at the rivers edge. People everywhere.
On closing we headed to this most classic of small American bars, Sengers. You could have spent hours just checking out all the paraphernalia behind the bar. Items ranged from stuffed ducks to antique cans etc.
It’s impossible to go into a bar like this and not meet interesting people. On Friday night we were yakking with a guy and his girl who was doling out good luck Buckeye Tree nut, otherwise known as a chestnut. I laughed and said cool, but I now have so many kind good luck charms, I’m going to end up super superstitious. Needless to say I pocketed one of the ever so small chestnuts. He even had a handout that came with it.
All in all it was a great night meeting heaps of people. I felt like a local in this place after only two days. Meeting another guy who knew Dawn from Alton, 12 miles south, on conversing he said why don’t I stay at his place tomorrow night when I get to Alton.
He had 3 young daughters with him, they were neat kids asking a million questions about Australia and how I survive with just a bike. I am looking forward to catching up with them again.
