Park Rapids all day, 8km, 22/6/2011
Even the locals are complaining about the weather. From a Coffs Harbour point of view, its as cold as our worst winters day with an east coast low doing its thing, in two words, wet and cold.
So have spent the day in and out of my motel room. Had a mighty fine kip this afternoon. There’s a Wall Mart super store down the road. It is open 24 hrs a day. An attendant said many people shop after midnight.
The store is almost as big as the plaza, you could easily fit GR’s populatoin of 3000 under this roof. At the enterance there were basic wheel chairs with signs on them saying sit down while you shop. I had a chuckle and thought what a great idea, the biggest problem might be finding someone to push you around.
Purchases were some mace in a small aerosol can that I have attached to the frame in case any of the local canine population take a liking to my ankles and a little plastic bottle design to make your bait worms look bigger by sqeezing a shot of air into them. I am filling this with water and squirting it on the rim brake pads to wash away any grit that in the past has been abrasing the rims as the brakes are applied.
The staff at Delaneys hunting shop next door to Super 8 were really helpful in directing me back to Brainerd tommorrow by way of some out of the way secondary and teriary roads, they said the scenery and a couple of the smaller towns are a treat, will be great.
If you ever happen to be here in PR make sure you have a meal at the Great Northern Diner next to Burger King. The staff are great, bottomless coffee and home cooked steaks, you name it. Importantly it’s good value.
The locals have been ever so helpful. My room has taken on the role as a laundry. It has a geat heater that is drying things nicely.
I feel I have now got a pattern to my packing. Put simply food and daily needs up front. With 1 rear pannier with things that I dont use to often.
Riding yesterday in wet conditions certainly takes the oil off the chain. It was almost dry on inspection today, a liberal dose of oil was applied.
So its been a day to regroup, get better organized, attend to small things, talk to a few people at home and just relax.
The forecast for the next two days appears tolerable.
