24/7/2011 Fort Madison, IA to Nauvoo, IL
32km, 2hrs, 15.64av. Total 3123. The most senssible temperature for days.
Speaking to Cal, last night he gave me good news and bad news the good news was Cadel Evans won the tour and the bad news was Amy was found dead.
Anyway, I had a yarn with the motel crew. Bob was fixing some birds car who had to drive a 1000m to Utah or somewhere and Howard was just cruising about.
It would have been easy to hang around and just do bugger all for a couple of hours. Wanting breakfast I headed Fort Colony Restaurant, as mentioned it is excellent and well worth stopping at if you are ever in this neck of the woods , a real locals hang.
Locating a place to use the net was easy, finding one that had a power outlet that was accessible was like trying to find a corner in a synagogue. These fast food chains are wising up.
I headed back across the MR to Niota and leisurely headed to Nauvoo. Morman territory deluxe. Arriving there I pulled into a servo.
Needing to know the deal here, was informed the Mormans own most of the businesses and do not patronise those that they don’t own. They buy them and either close them down or begin to support them making them viable once more.
It’s amazing what many people with a common goal can achieve.
They have a huge temple in town built in 1999. I had a bit of a browse at the things and being Sunday all businesses in town owned by the M’s were closed. That was ok, I needed for little. Stopped at the only supermaket, I bought a steak and some fresh veges, knowing the Nauvoo SP was not far away.
The M’s were in the nearing the end of a pageant that went for a month. Pulling in at the camp ground, I have never seen so many people camping dressed in shirts and ties.
Cooking tea,I got a bit slack with closing the tent, consequently heaps of mozzies took up residence before their dinner arrived. It was the precusor to a sleepless night.
Night time temps were still around 25 plus degrees. Being an English tent the ventilation though present is sometimes not adequate, opening the tent exposes one to any mozies in the void between it and the fly.
