30/82011 Columbia to Chester
D95, T5.5, Av17.27, Total 4963
Opening up the aero clubhouse, some water was retrieved and a brew made.
Heading off about 0830. The road was following bottom lands with bluffs on my left and the river with more bluffs beyond the river to the west.
The temperature was in the 30’s with a southerly wind blowing, it was hard going and hot.
Even the soya beans roadside were curling up their leaves to reduce transpiration.
With no services between the aero club and Prarie du Rocher. The sight of the bar was most welcome.
Five sprites and pork chop with salad were consumed. Back on the road, further 5 miles away more drinks were consumed at Modoc.
My destination was now Chester which involved some hill climbing to reach the town which is above the bluffs.
Earlier in the day I had lost a key to my cable padlock, a bolt cutter proof German lock bought in Coffs before my departure . calling in at a hardware store, with no success at finding a blank, they directed me to the local locksmith.
He was at work ,however his wife was home, we spent time chatting before he arrived home. He worked at the local low security prison.
He couldn’t locate a blank either and rang a supplier, as it turns out it is an internatoinal blank and hard to get hold of. Dead end.
Pam, his wife had told me where to camp at the pool grounds, prior to this I had to check my email. This was done at the library. While there a note came for me to go to the Eagles club where they have free accommodation for cyclists.
Arriving there, another cyclist Tom was already insitu, a nice guy on his way to a reunion with the peace corps in DC. He knew Central America well and gave me some invaluable information on travel there.
Four other cyclists, two guys and two girls, mid twenties, from Massachusetts arrived just on dark. Really nice people who had thrown in their respective jobs and heading to Oregon to seek their fortune. Cool stuff, they were fun and enjoyable company.
