Quincy all day, fine 30℃, 26/7/2011
23km, total 3261km
I arose with plans to go to Hannibal, MO, Mark Twains boyhood home. Once again the racoons had been visiting, a few items were rearranged. Leaving the camp ground, I caught up with the owner, we had a lengthy yarn.
Apparently Illinois is broke and is battling to pay for many of it’s own services, the only thing keeping some nursing homes open is their private patients. Many businesses are moving across the river to MO because state taxes are cheaper.
Mentioning that it was no good door knocking on the federal government, as they too are broke, we both agreed the situation is rather dire. Though Quincy had an air of positiveness about it.
Putting that aside Denise’s Driftwood Park, north of town on Bonansigna Drive, is a great place to stop, clean shower block, is shadyand has a welcome pool.
Heading into town to Thyme Square cafe as suggested. Another unexpected delay was had, sitting outside talking for an hour to another friendly woman about why grass grows as we ate. We had a good laugh about stuff, she was a teacher.
She went on to tell me that the 3 month holiday the kids have here this time of year is based around planting and harvesting the corn etc. It hasn’t changed, she said some of the kids forget what they have been taught due to this long break.
I visited the only bike shop in town, the guy was real helpful, he showed me how to split the sram chain joiner pin in less than half an hour.
I bought a small bar mirror. Not sure if it is such a good idea, while looking at it, loosing my line can occur and this is more dangerous than not knowing what’s behind you.
A few energy gels were purchased, just in case a scenario like Warsaw to Ursa reoccurs.
The population here was big enough to to have a Walmart with decent sports stores still being viable. Needing a fuel bottle and a dry bag. I headed to a supermarket type sports shop. A better desciption would have been an arsenal. Half the shop, bigger than any Woolworths store, was devoted to guns, ammunition, deer and how to attract them, most of the stuff, including the guns were finished in cammo colours. I had trouble seeing some it.
The pistol section fascinated me, I told the guys about our gun laws, they remarked, we need to sort that out.
They gave me the .5inch magnum pistol to hold, it comes with an arm sling in the box. The guy remarked that most people can only fire 5 consequtive rounds.
They then showed me the home protection range, which included pistol grip shot guns with short barrels, the kind you see the Carridine brothers reef out from under a great coat to extinguish those threatening them.
From here I went to the museum, which is located in the house of a wealthy family from settlement days, the house is now in possession of the historical society. They have done a brilliant job. Living in the late 1800’s was recreated along with civil war exhibits.
The architecture on Maine street is significant country wide.
I spent the afternoon in an Irish pub, resigned to a rest day. Accomodation was arranged with the help of the staff, at a motel at the edge of town, $25 per night.
Lea would love this place, it had TV,shower, air and a bed. All that was required. The carpet looked like someone had just done an oil change on a Harley, the guy who did it must also have been a chain smoker, that smell lingered. It was called the Diamond motel, a better name might have been the Lead Motel.
Hey, what do you expect for twenty five, putting that aside it provided a good nights sleep and was presented as best as possible and the owner gave me a discount.
He was catering for a market and was full.
